Expensive Bedding? Here's how to protect it!

Expensive Bedding? Here's how to protect it!
August 30 2016

Let’s get one thing out in the open: mattresses are EXPENSIVE. When you buy a mattress, you are choosing to invest in your sleep. Now forget about the mattress and think about all the sheets, pillowcases, pillows, duvets, duvet covers, quilts, bedspreads, comforters, mattress pads, etc. that we’re told we MUST have. Buying all of that (and then washing and maintaining it can get expensive). On the other hand, spend a night tossing and turning (or have a newborn baby in the house) and you’ll quickly realize that sleep is priceless. Even though sleep is priceless, no one wants to bring home an expensive mattress, only later to find out they have to replace it in a year or two due to wear and tear.

Being a hotel linen distributor has helped us gain the most sought-after knowledge in the bed linen industry and we are here to share our wisdom with you. Our advice is to buy quality bedding and protect it. These tips are sure to help prolong the life of your bedding:

  1. The Flip. Rotate your mattress every 6 months. Just like we rotate our car tires due to wear and tear, mattresses also need to be rotated. This will ensure the mattress does not sink lower in one particular spot. By rotating your mattress each side will distribute weight accordingly and provide support evenly.
  2. The Added Cushion. Place a mattress pad/protector over the entire mattress. By adding a mattress pad between you and your mattress it will give you an extra layer of support. It will also help prevent your mattress springs from poking through. If you want your sleep to be extra luxurious, try a fiber bed mattress topper which can turn any mattress into a bed fit for royalty. Some mattress protectors can even help fight against bed bugs and are water resistant to help the mattress last longer. *Pro Tip: It’s very important to encase your mattress if it’s going to be used by multiple guests at a hotel, motel or air B&B to fight against bed bugs.
  3. The Cover. Cover everything that you can. You have pillows? Use a pillow protector and a pillowcase! Have a duvet? Cover it with a good duvet cover. Sleep on an expensive mattress? Protect it with a mattress pad. The added layers will not only protect your bedding from everyday wear and tear, it will add more layers of support and comfort. Who can argue with that?
  4. The Style. Make sure the beds in your home are inviting not only to guests, but also to you! Duvets, throws, pillows and bedspreads are just a few of your bedding basics that will enhance any bedroom. Consider making your bed every morning. Making your bed every morning is a monotonous task, but it helps to improve your state of mind and also helps to keep the structure of your bedding intact which keeps the fabric in good shape. *Pro Tip: Pillows in particular should be plumped daily to maintain their shape.
  5. The Wash and Go. Maintaining the quality of your bedding has a lot to do with how you wash it! Steer clear of fabric softeners with bleaching agents as they can weaken the natural fibers in your sheets. To keep a regular cleaning schedule wash your decorative bedding (Shams, Quilts, Duvets) at the beginning of every season. Sheets and pillowcases should be washed every 10 days to help keep your mattress fresh and the dust mites away.
  6. The Extra. You should always have a couple of sheet sets per bed in case of accidents. You never know when you’ll have a late night craving for chocolate chip cookies and *accidentally* smear chocolate on your sheets and spill milk on your bed. Store these extra sheets in a cool and dry area like a closet or bench at the end of your bed. Side Note: Never store your extra bedding in plastic containers – these containers trap moisture which can lead to smelly/moldy sheets!

We spend approximately 1/3 of our life sleeping. Based off that fact alone, purchasing high quality bedding is completely justifiable. After all, investing in quality sleep is investing in you.
